This is a copy of the slave receipt carried by Dan Delany for the purchase of his slave, Rachael. He needed the receipt to prove his ownership upon arriving in Oregon Country. The receipt reads:
Received of Daniel Delany four Hundred and fifty dollars in full payment for a negro girl named Rachael aged fourteen years the Right and Tittle of said negro I Bind myself my heirs Executors and assigns to warrant and forever defend also warrant the soundness of Boddy and mind of said negro this the 3 day of Sept 1842
